National referendum needed to redraw border with Lebanon

Approval by 80 MKs or national referendum needed to redraw border with
Lebanon
Dr. Aaron Lerner 1 May 2024

Diplomatic Affairs Correspondent Gillie Cohen reported on Kan TV news
tonight that the American Government believes that a hostage deal with Hamas
could cause war in the north. Israel is willing to consider redrawing the
border with Lebanon along with a withdrawal of Hezbullah by "a few
kilometers" instead of beyond the Litani River to bring calm to the area so
that the Israelis evacuated from the northern border can return home.

The "disputed territory" includes areas, such as Shebaa Farms, which were
under Syria control before the Six Day War and annexed by Israel when Israel
annexed the Golan.

It should be noted that even if Prime Minister Netanyahu opts to bow to
American pressure that Basic Law: Referendum applies to territory on the
Israeli side of the border which is part of the sovereign State of Israel,.

Basic Law: Referendum

Referendum

1. (a) The government's decision to approve an agreement or to sign an
agreement, according to which the jurisdiction, judiciary, and
administration of the State of Israel will no longer apply to a territory in
which they currently apply, including an agreement that includes commitments
for the future and commitments conditional on conditions, the agreement
shall, after it has been approved by the Knesset by a majority of its
members, be subject to a referendum, unless it has been approved by a
majority of eighty Knesset members.

(b) The government's decision, not by way of an agreement, that the
jurisdiction, judiciary, and administration of the State of Israel will no
longer apply to a territory in which they currently apply, shall be subject
to a referendum, unless it has been approved by a majority of eighty Knesset
members.
