CONGRESS LOBBIED TO OPPOSE JDAMs FOR EGYPT

WASHINGTON [MENL] -- Pro-Israel lobbyists have launched a campaign to urge
the Bush administration and Congress to oppose an Egyptian request for
advanced U.S. airborne munitions for Egypt.

Congressional sources said a range of Christian and Jewish groups have sent
messages to the White House and key members of the House and Senate to
oppose any U.S. sale of the Joint Direct Attack Munitions to Egypt. The
sources said the lobbyists warned that Egypt could use such weapons in any
future war with Israel.

The U.S. military has used the JDAMs in Afghanistan and Iraq. The system
converts general purpose bombs into precision guided munitions.

The U.S. Defense Department has sold JDAMs to Israel. But the department has
turned down the transfer of an advanced JDAM variant for Israel's air force.
