Aaron Lerner Date: 10 September 2004

Teleseker - for Maariv
529 Adult Israelis (including Israeli Arabs) week of 10 September 2004:

Percent "satisfied with Sharon's performance as prime minister: 41%
Percent feel secure on a personal level: 58%

What is your position regarding construction in the settlements?
23% Support unlimited construction
25% Support construction only for natural growth
45% Oppose all construction

[IMRA: It turns out that what appears to be a simple question is
considerably more complicated.

What exactly do respondents have in mind when they refer to settlements?

The Tami Steinmetz Center for Peace Research of Tel Aviv University Peace
Index survey that was conducted
August 29-31, 2004 came up with fascinating results relating to this:

They asked a representative sample of adult Israelis (including Israeli
Arabs) if they considered various places to be in "the territories" in terms
of negotiations with the Palestinians. The following are the percentage of
respondents who replied that each location was "in the territories": Maale
Adumim 26.4% Ariel 28.6% Kiryat Arba in Hebron 38% Gush Etzion settlements
31% Jordan Valley settlements 25%.

So when the opinion pollsters/molders with Maariv found that 45% oppose all
construction did these respondents really mean that they want a construction
freeze in Gush Etzion? ]

This week the foreign minister and defense minister said that Israel still
intends to expel Arafat from the region. Should Israel expel Arafat?
Yes 56% No 36%

In light of reports about the "mole" affair, do you think that Israel spies
on the United States?
Yes 39% No 49%

Did Minister Hanegbi violate the law or did he follow common hiring
practices and should not be investigated?
Violated law 59% Followed practice 22%

Did you hear about the dispute between the finance minister and the bank
regarding the funds:
Yes 73% No 27%

Should the bans continue managing the funds or should they be transferred to
[private hands?
Keep with banks 42% Transfer 34%
