Archives: Glorification of violence propagated in UNRWA School notebook

Intelligence and Terrorism Information Center
at the Center for Special Studies (C.S.S)

School notebook in Kalandia Refugee Camp reflects the glorification
of violence as propagated in UNRWA schools in Palestinian Territories

Cover of a pupil's notebook about residents from the Kalandia refugee camp,
killed during the Intifada.
It relates to members of Fatah / Al Aqsa Martyrs Brigades. The poster on the
cover page is of Omar Wahadan
Abu Elmajd, who was killed in an exchange of fire with IDF forces in the
Ramallah area on January 21, 2002.
The caption reads: " Star Team": The Martyrs of the Refugee Camp
Kalandia-Jerusalem."

Background: An analysis of the notebook and its contents

1.Studies of textbooks used in the Palestinian educational system have
repeatedly indicated a glorification of the violence used in the Palestinian
struggle, such as the death of martyrs and others who have died. The terms
such as 'shahid' (martyr), 'Fida'i' (who endangers his life in the name of
Allah), 'Istishh'ad' (dying for the glorification of Allah), while mostly
referring to suicide acts, and also 'Jihad' (Holy war) - are all being
deeply ingrained in next generation of Palestinians. This lengthy process of
indoctrination starts at nursery school level and continues right through to
college and university.

2.Among material recently found by the IDF was a notebook containing a
notebook by a pupil, which clearly demonstrates the results of such
indoctrination, whether from a school or home environment. The notebook was
entitled "Star Team: The Martyrs of the Refugee Camp Kalandia-Jerusalem." A
subtitle on an inner page refers to "Star Team: Martyrs of the El-Aksa
Intifada".

3.The aim of this notebook appears to be the glorification of the memories
of members of Fatah / Al Aqsa Martyrs Brigades from the Kalandia refugee
camp, killed during the violent events in the current Palestinian uprising.
The notebook includes words of praise for those killed, their photographs,
posters on which they appear, Fatah emblems, the Palestinian flag and
photographs of armed Israeli soldiers. No date appears but the notebook
refers to those killed in the years 2001 and 2002. There are no details
about the author. It is reasonable to assume that the work was performed by
a teenage girl from the senior classes of a primary school or from a junior
high school (12-14 years old).

4.The notebook contains multiple expressions of glorification of and praise
for the names and the actions of those killed. It sets them as role models
for young Palestinians. It is also filled with solid propaganda concerning
the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. An example of this can be seen in the
following excerpts taken from the notebook:

a.A verse from the Koran that reads, "Think not of those who were slain
for the sake of Allah as dead, but rather as living with their Lord by Him
provided". This is a well-known verse from the Koran (Sura Aal-Imran, verse
169) and has been used as a motto on posters and death notices of suicide
bombers.

b."Total loyalty to the blood of those killed."

c.A photograph of Ali Ibrahim Aljulani is portrayed and reproduced below.
He was killed in a gun battle in Tel Aviv on 5 August 2001. [The handwritten
caption reads: "Who died a martyr,s death". Hand-drawn hearts, signs of
love, appear after the names ,Ali, and ,Aljulani,. Hand-drawn hearts also
appear next to other names.]

d.Several images of masked armed terrorists appear in the notebook,
including one image pasted to the back cover of the notebook.

5.It is important to recall that the notebook was used in an UNRWA-run
school, possibly even supplied by the institution itself. The back cover
carries the UNRWA emblem with the word 'UNRWA' covered by an image of an
armed, masked terrorist, shooting from a kneeling position. There have been
many other documented incidences of UNRWA schools serving as an incubator
for incitement and hate against Israel in refugee camps. They act to
maintain the growing level violence in future generations of Palestinian
youth.

APPENDIX

Pushing the message "All of Palestine" in UNRWA school summer camps

1.Another example of the way messages hostile to Israel are spread in
UNRWA-run schools is the presentation of a shield to a senior Palestinian
official.

2.The shield contains the map of the whole of Palestine, in the colors of
the Palestinian flag. The message, popularized throughout Palestinian areas
is very clear: The whole area of Palestine belongs to the Palestinians and
there is no place for the existence of a State of Israel. (The very same
concept emanates from the maps that appear in Palestinian Authority
schoolbooks, which are distributed and used in the territories).

3.This message is given the apparent support of UNRWA by the use of its
emblem.

4.This elegant shield (see the picture below) was presented to the Director
of the Palestinian Authority's Undersecretary of Culture, Yahya Yakhluf.
