Poll: Israelis Apprehensive Regarding Post-Arafat Palestinian Leadership

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
28 November 2004

JERUSALEM SUMMIT POLL INDICATES:
Israelis Apprehensive Regarding Post-Arafat Palestinian Leadership

(JERUSALEM)- Israeli public opinion regarding prospects for dealing with a
post-Arafat Palestinian leadership are pessimistic and apprehensive,
according to a poll conducted for The Jerusalem Summit by Magar Muhot Ltd.,
under the supervision of Profs. Yitzhak Katz and Baruch Mevorah.

"Even before Abu Mazen promised the Palestinians 'more of the same' this
past week, vowing to adhere to core principles of Arafat, the Israelis were
dubious about hopes for any sort of short term breakthrough or improvement,"
said Dr. Martin Sherman of Tel Avuv University and Adacemic Director of The
Jerusalem Summit, as the second Jerusalem Summit today opened. It will
continue through Tuesday, Nov. 30.

Among key findings of the poll:

- 80% believe that any Palestinian state controlled by extremists would
represent an existential threat to Israel

- Nearly 2 out of 3 Israelis believe that military operations should be
relied on should the new Palestinian leaders continue Intifada terror
tactics in 2005. Less than 20% feel Israel should not continue to try to
reach an agreement with the Palestinians under these conditions.

- Nearly one-half do not believe new leaders will be able to effectively
counter terror; one-third believe they will be able to (no opinion expressed
by the remainder)

- 53% believe the chances of reaching an agreement with the Palestinians
have not improved by Arafat's death

- Nearly 40% believe post-Arafat leadership will NOT be more moderate than
Arafat, with a significant minority feeling it will be even more extreme
