Bethlehem - Ma'an - A military statement from the so-called 'Buraq Army,'
which is allegedly affiliated to the Al-Aqsa brigades, the main armed wing
of Fatah, claimed responsibility on Wednesday for an attempt to assassinate
an Israeli Knesset member.

The statement, which Ma'an received, said, "The Al-Buraq army unit
penetrated deep into the Israeli territories with the aim of undertaking a
task of liquidating an Israeli Knesset member after a month of planning and
monitoring."

The statement added that the incident took place on Monday, 5th February
2007 at 1:00 am when the unit opened fire at the Knesset member's car using
a sound-muffled gun. The operation took place at the Alon Sadeh junction
near Ramat Gan, close to Tel Aviv in central Israel, according to the
statement. The driver of the car was killed; he was later named as Dr David
Niv, the director of a department at Ichilov Hospital in Tel Aviv.

The statement said the delay in the announcement of this operation was due
to security reasons. The statement also abstained from revealing the name of
the MK who was the target of the operation.
