Jordan to Support Celebrating Jerusalem as Capital of Arab Culture for 2009

Amman, Sept. 4 (Petra - Jordan news agency)-Jordan expressed its readiness
to provide support to the Palestinian National Authority to ensure the
success of activities on declaring Jerusalem as the capital of Arab culture
for the year 2009.

Minister of Culture Adel Tweisi said during a meeting with his Palestinian
counterpart Ibrahim Al Abrash, that Jordan would provide all facilities to
hold the official ceremony on declaring Jerusalem as the capital of Arab
culture, should it be impossible to hold the ceremony in Jerusalem due to
the Israeli occupation.

He added that JD709,000 have been allocated for preparations and cultural
activities related to this event.

Jordan, Tweisi said, will review during the upcoming Arab culture ministers'
conference in Algeria, the activities that should be held to highlight
Jerusalem's position on the Arab, Islamic and international levels, its
identity and the need to defend it and establish cultural centers in the
city.

The Palestinian minister stressed keenness to continue coordinating with
Jordan on this issue with a view to highlighting the historical position of
the city.

Prime Minister Marouf Bakhit approved the formation of higher committee,
chaired by the culture minister to celebrate Jerusalem as the 'capital of
Arab culture' in 2009.

The step came in implementation of a decision taken by Arab culture
ministers to choose Jerusalem as a capital for Arab culture for the year
2009 during a conference that was held in the Omani capital Muscat last
year.
