Nablus - Ma'an - Two northern West Bank towns were connected to new and
expanded local water systems, significantly reducing the threat of drought
and crop failure with the help of the Palestinian Water Authority and a
grant from the EU.

The Nablus district towns of Beit Furik and Beit Dajan now offer municipal
water services to residents, bringing the total number of West Bank
residential areas having independent water services to 180, PWA officials
said.

The residents used to rely on water being transferred to the town system by
Israeli water companies, and service was often interrupted by checkpoint
closures. Residents were only allowed ten water tankers per day for all the
needs of both towns.

The PWA and the Red Cross began talks in 2007 around building a main water
line to connect the residents to two water storage wells of 3100 and 3500
cubic meters. The total cost of the EU funded project was 11 million shekels
(2.84million US dollars).

Similar projects are currently being considered in villages near Salfit,
Nablus, Tulkarem and Jenin. The PWA is seeking assistance from donor
countries to finance the projects.
