Ha'aretz: Security Council denunciation will make it hard for Barak to sell appointing UN as the overseer of the Temple Mount

Ha'aretz: Security Council denunciation will make it hard for Barak to sell appointing UN as the overseer of the Temple Mount.

Akiva Eldar Ha'aretz 5 October 2000

Fourteen countries, including Britain and Holland, backed a UN Security
Council resolution condemning Israel. The usual procedure is that Israel
asks the United States to veto the resolution and it is dropped from the
agenda. This time the situation is much more complicated. Israel attributes
a central role to the UN in working out an arrangement on the Temple Mount,
whereas the Arabs, primarily Arafat, are not enthusiastic about this. One of
their main arguments is that whenever there is a disagreement between the
parties, the United States will side with Israel. On the other hand, a
denunciation in the Security Council will not help Barak sell to the Israeli
public the UN as the overseer, even if just symbolically, of the Temple
Mount.
