New Jihad Group in Syria Announces Its Establishment

A new jihad group, Jabhat Al-Nusra Li-Ahl Al-Sham, ("The Front for the
Protection of the Syrian People") whose goal is to topple the Syrian regime,
has released a video announcing its establishment. The 16-minute video,
which was produced by the group's media company Al-Manara Al-Baida ("White
Lighthouse"), was posted January 24, 2012 on the jihadi forum Shumoukh
Al-Islam after a two-day promotion campaign that included large banners and
a countdown to the release.

The video states that the members of the new group are Syrian jihad fighters
who have returned to their country from various jihad fronts in response to
their people's call, in order to defend them against the regime's brutality.

The main speaker in the video is a man calling himself Abu Muhammad
Al-Julani ["Abu Muhammad from the Golan"], who reads out an announcement
while footage shows the group's members undergoing weapons training and
holding up black banners bearing the slogan "there is no god but Allah" and
the group's name.

Special Dispatch No. 4442—Lebanon/Jihad and Terrorism Threat Monitor

Lebanese Jihad Group Calls on Syrians Not to Pin Hopes on Arab League
Observers but Launch Jihad against Assad Regime

In a communiqué issued by its political bureau, the Lebanese jihad group
Fath Al-Islam attacks the Arab League observers in Syria, accusing them of
ignoring the massacre of civilians and of serving the Assad regime. It calls
upon the Syrian people to launch jihad against the regime, thereby turning
their country into a "starting point from which the next [Islamic] conquests
will begin." It also urges Hizbullah to "stop barking with the [Syrian]
regime" and generating conflict "between the Syrians and their brothers, the
Lebanese and Palestinian people."

The following are excerpts from the communiqué, which was posted January 13,
2012 on the jihadi website Shumoukh Al-Islam.

Fath Al-Islam states that the delegation of Arab League observers, at first
perceived as a "lifeline" for the Syrians who are "drowning in their own
blood," has turned out to be a heavy stone dragging them into the depths,
for it is ignoring Assad's massacre of his own people.

Special Dispatch No. 4441—Syria/Jihad and Terrorism Threat Monitor

Senior Mujahid Abu 'Ubayda to Sunni Syrians: 'The Time for Peaceful Arab
Revolutions Is Over; Now It Is Time for Killing and Fighting'; Only Jihad
Will Resolve the Standoff between You and the 'Alawis

In an article posted on the jihadi website Shumoukh Al-Islam, titled "Syria
and the Emerging Hope," senior mujahid 'Abdallah Khaled Al-'Adm, aka Abu
'Ubayda, wrote that the situation in Syria heralds the imminent victory of
Islam. He stated that Syria is dar al-harb – i.e., part of the Abode of War,
where a struggle is ongoing between the forces of Islam and the forces of
heresy – and urged the Sunnis to wage jihad against the infidel 'Alawis, for
only jihad will erase the years of surrender and humiliation and restore the
Muslims' glory.

The following are the main points of the article, which was distributed by
Al-Qaeda's media company, Al-Fajr.

Rafiq Nasrallah, Director of the Lebanese International Center for Media and
Research Interview on Hezbollah Al-Manar TV: I Support the Option of the
Resistance Initiating War against Israel

Following are excerpts from an interview with Rafiq Nasrallah, director of
the Lebanese International Center for Media and Research, which aired on Al-
Manar TV on December 12, 2011:

Rafiq Nasrallah: "It has become evident that any conflict will not be waged
only on Lebanese soil. In other words, the war will not take place only in
South Lebanon or Beirut, and will not be limited to us being bombed from the
air. If you bombard me – I will bombard you, deep in your land, and I might
even advance into your [territory]. Some may think I am exaggerating, but
some of the things I have said in the past have come true… I believe that
from March, and into the summer, we will be using new language."
