New York, Feb. 9 (Petra) - UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon late Wednesday
stressed the importance for the Palestinians and Israelis to continue talks
and make constructive proposals concerning land, security and
confidence-building between the two sides, UN radio reported.
During his speech to the UN Security Council on his recent visit to the
Occupied Palestinian Territories and Israel, the radio quoted Ban as saying
"the right moment has come for the peace process in the Middle East," adding
that he spoke with Palestinian President Abbas after his agreement with
Hamas movement leader Khaled Meshaal to form a new technocrats government,
under the leadership of the Palestinian Authority.
The UN chief reiterated his position that the Palestinian Fatah-Hamas
reconciliation accord signed in Qatar, earlier this week does not conflict
with President Abbas' negotiations with Israel.
He urged both Abbas and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to
recognize the need to rebuild momentum and not to miss the opportunity
offered by king Abdullah II to resume negotiations which took place in Amman
in January, but to no avail.
He also urged them to show goodwill gestures and positive facts on the
ground to achieve progress in peace negotiations.
