PA starts Ramadan according to Saudis - not Iran

[Dr. Aaron Lerner - IMRA: The Saudis announced Ramadan would start Thursday
night while the Iranians announced the new moon would only be visible Friday
night. The PA is following the Saudis. The Jewish month of Av started
Thursday night.]

Amman, 19/07/2012 (WAFA) - President Mahmoud Abbas congratulated all sons of
our Palestinian people in the homeland and the diaspora, on the occasion of
the holy month of Ramadan, hoping to God Almighty to bless us all with
prosperity, blessings were achieved our aspirations for freedom and
independence, and establish our independent Palestinian state on our land
with Jerusalem as its capital, and our prisoners in the prisons of the
occupation saw the dawn of freedom.

Riyadh, Sha'ban 28, 1433, Jul 18, 2012, SPA - The Supreme Court has called
on all Muslims in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to sight the crescent of the
blessed month of Ramadan on Thursday evening, Shaaban 29, 1433AH,
corresponding to July 19, 2012, according to Umm Al-Qura Calendar.

In an announcement, the Supreme Court also called on whoever sees the
crescent of the blessed month of Ramadan by naked eyes or through binoculars
to report to the nearest court and register his testimony, or report to the
authority of the regionís governorate if there is no judge in the area where
he sighted the crescent in order to facilitate his reaching to the nearest
court.

The Supreme Court also urges all Muslims to sight the Crescent for the
cooperation of all Muslims in righteousness and piety.

Tehran, July 18, IRNA -- The head of Iran's Amateur Astronomy Society,
Masoud Atighi, says the crescent of the fasting month of Ramadan can be
observed in Iran with naked eye at sunset Friday, July 20.

Atighi told IRNA that the crescent cannot be sighted anywhere in Iran
Thursday evening, Shaaban 29, 1433AH, corresponding to July 19, 2012,

So, the fasting month of Ramadan will begin in Iran on Saturday and Friday
is the last day of the lunar month of Sha'ban.

Muslims begin Ramadan based on the physical sighting of the moon by the
naked eye which is usually confirmed by religious authorities.

Fasting is intended to teach Muslims about faith, spirituality,
self-accountability and self-restraint.
