An Open Letter to Egyptian President Morsey – Close Down the Tunnels

Dear President Morsey,

When you were elected you stated that Egypt would honor its treaty
obligations.

You know very well that the treaty Egypt signed with Israel obligates it to
prevent the smuggling of weapons to the Gaza Strip via Egyptian Sinai.

You know Egypt is supposed to close down the smuggling tunnels.

In fact, since your election there have been numerous press releases
indicating that a major tunnel destroying operation was either underway or
about to be launched.

But they were nothing more than press releases.

Now is the time for Egypt to honor its treaty obligations.

If Egypt were to close down the smuggling tunnels the situation in the Gaza
Strip would rapidly restore to calm and remain calm for years to come.

If the tunnels remain open the quiet – when it comes – will be very
temporary. And the next round of conflict will be only worse as the weapons
increase in their deadly firepower.

Again, for the sake of everyone, honor your obligations.

Don't force Israel to have to address the smuggling tunnel challenge in the
absence of Egyptian compliance.
