Senior officials in Israel say that four EU countries tried to prevent any
condemnation or comment on the speech Hamas leader Khaled Mashaal last
weekend against Israel. Denmark, Finland, Portugal and Ireland pressured the
European foreign ministers to include in their summary only condemnation of
Israel.

Our Diplomatic Affairs Commentator learned that only thanks to
counter-pressure by Germany and the Czech Republic a paragraph was added to
the announcement rejecting Hamas' statements against Israel's right to
exist.

Our Commentator notes that this is the background to the harsh statements
made by Foreign Minister Liberman against EU countries.

====
IMRA: The following is the paragraph that was added to the statement:

9. The European Union reiterates its fundamental commitment to the
security of Israel, including with regard to vital threats in the region.
The European Union will never stop opposing those who embrace and promote
violence as a way to achieve political goals. The EU finds inflammatory
statements by Hamas leaders that deny Israel's right to exist unacceptable.
The European Union will never cease its efforts to combat terrorism which
seeks to undermine the openness and tolerance of societies through
indiscriminate acts of violence against civilians.
