JEWISH LEADERS SUPPORT CONGRESSIONAL APPEAL FOR POLLARD’S RELEASE
December 10, 2012, New York…Leaders of the Conference of Presidents of Major
American Jewish Organizations today expressed appreciation and support for
the Congressional initiative to secure the release of Jonathan Pollard.
Richard Stone, Chairman, and Malcolm Hoenlein, Executive Vice Chairman, of
the Conference of Presidents said, “We thank Congressmen Eliot Engel and
Chris Smith for their leadership in organizing the letter to President Obama
urging him to grant clemency to Jonathan Pollard. We join the scores of
members of Congress in their appeal. Mr. Pollard is a short time away from
his 10,000th day in prison. Twenty seven years is a disproportionate
sentence and warrants the consideration of the President on humanitarian
grounds.
“As we are in the holiday season it would be a particularly appropriate time
to heed the appeal of the many leaders from a wide variety of spheres of
American life, in addition to the many members of Congress who have appealed
for his release. This includes people who were involved in the case or
others who were initially opposed to any act of clemency. They have now
called for Pollard’s release.
“We have visited Mr. Pollard and have heard his expressions of remorse for
his actions, which he has delivered publicly. He has serious health
challenges which continued incarceration will exacerbate. His further
incarceration is indefensible," said Stone and Hoenlein.
