RAMALLAH, February 24, 2013 (WAFA) – President Mahmoud Abbas Sunday
expressed his deepest condolences, through a phone call, to the family of
Palestinian prisoner Arafat Jaradat, 30, who died on Saturday in Israeli
jails.

Arafat Jaradat, a resident of Hebron and a father of two children under the
age 3 and an expected third; his wife is four months pregnant, died on
Saturday in Majdo Israeli prison six days after he was arrested.

Prime Minister Salam Fayyad expressed his deepest shock and sadness over the
death of Jaradat and stressed the utmost need to reveal the reasons behind
his death.

He stressed that Israel cannot be exempt from its responsibilities as
Jaradat died while detained in Israeli jails, which forms a flagrant
violation of the Fourth Geneva Convention.

He called on the international community to uphold its legal and moral
responsibilities to compel Israel to the rules of the international law.

He also called for an immediate solution to the prisoners’ file and the need
to promptly release them.

Meanwhile, Hanan Ashrawi, member of the Palestine Liberation Organization's
(PLO) Executive Committee also held Israel fully responsible for Jaradat’s
death, and called on the United Nations, the international community, as
well as the international human rights organizations to promptly intervene
and demanded an international investigation into his death.

She also called to promptly release all prisoners from Israeli jails without
any conditions. “The death of Jaradat is yet another proof to the dangerous
situations in the Israeli jails.”
