A severe Iron Dome malfunction – the fourth battery of the Iron Dome air
defense system was out of order for approximately a month and a half due to
winter flooding.

The system battery was stationed in the area of the Hetzor airbase near
Ashdod was not de when the nearby river overflowed due to the heavy rain,
flooding the base and damaging the battery.

Thus, during the preparations in Israel’s northern region at the time of the
attack that foreign publications claimed occurred in Syria, when the IAF
deployed three batteries in the north, the fourth battery was not
operational and suffered heavy damage. It has recently been returned to
service.

The IDF Spokesperson stated in response that “components of the Iron Dome
system were damaged due to flooding during the stormy days at the start of
January. The damaged components were transferred for mechanical treatment,
repaired and returned to full service.”

The publication comes today against the backdrop of the fire of a rocket
towards the city of Ashkelon in the morning, marking the first fire since
operation Pillar of Defense in November 2012. A Grad rocket exploded south
of Ashkelon. No casualties were reported, but damage was caused due to the
explosion. The IDF assessed that it was a sporadic fire as a token of
sympathy with protesters in the Judea and Samaria region, or as a rocket
test fire which accidentally fell in Israeli territory.
