Second stunning revelation from Amidror - knew everything about tunnels but
didn't appreciate significance

On 16 July, Maj.-Gen. (res.) Yaakov Amidror, who served as the National
Security Advisor of Israel from May 2011 until November 2013, made the
stunning revelation on Chanel 2 TV News that he [someone who had full access
to all Israeli intelligence] was surprised that there were rockets in the
Gaza Strip that could reach beyond Tel Aviv.

In a second stunning revelation this afternoon also on Channel 2 TV, Amidror
defended the Israeli security services against criticism for the failure to
be aware of the tunnel threat.

Amidror explained that the Israeli security services were not at all
surprised by any aspect of the tunnels - they just didn't appreciate the
significance of the tunnels.

To be clear: Amidror wasn't being sarcastic. Maj.-Gen. (res.) Yaakov
Amidror genuinely thought that this was a legitimate defense of the
performance of the Israeli security services.

Take note: the very same security people who prepared the force estimates
that missed the rockets that could reach beyond Tel Aviv are the ones who
are providing estimates of what rockets, missiles and other offensive
capabilities remain now in the Gaza Strip.

And the very same security people who prepared the force estimates who were
unable to connect the dots to appreciate the operational significance of
tunnels reaching into Israel are presenting estimates to the Security
Cabinet of the security risks associated with entering into a "humanitarian
pause" in the Gaza Strip.
