Poll: Two-thirds of Egyptians believe that there is religious extremism in Egypt

As a part of its poll series on religious extremism, the Egyptian Centre for
Public Opinion Research (Baseera) conducted an opinion poll on Egyptians’
perceptions regarding the extent of religious extremism in the country and
its impact on Egypt.

Results of the poll suggest that 63% of Egyptians believe that there is
religious extremism in the country, 25% believe that there is no religious
extremism, and 12% are undecided.

The percentage of those who believe that there is religious extremism in the
country is increase from 56% in Upper Egypt to 61% in urban governorates and
69% in Lower Egypt. It is higher among those ages 50 or above (76%) than
those aged 18-29 (55%). It is also higher among those with university
education (72%) than among those with less than intermediate education
(59%).

About 63% of those who believe that there is religious extremism in the
country expect extremism to decrease in the future, 24% expect it to
increase and 1% expect it to remain the same, and 12% were undecided. The
percentage of those who expect religious extremism to decrease increase from
55% among those with less than intermediate education to 68% among those
with university education.

When asked if religious extremism causes a problem for Egypt, 73% of all
respondents said that it causes a big problem, 9% said it causes medium
problem, and 4% said that it causes a small problem, with 9% stating that
religious extremism doesn't cause a problem to Egypt at all at present and
will not do so in the future, and 5% were undecided.

About 59% of Egyptians say that religious extremism will greatly harm
Egypt's image abroad, 13% say it will moderately harm Egypt's image, and 4%
say it will slightly harm Egypt's image, while 16% said that it will not do
any harm, and 8% were undecided.

On the impact of religious extremism on the flow of Arab investment in
Egypt, 47% said religious extremism will cause great harm to Arab
investment, 17% said that it will cause moderate harm, 4% said it will cause
slight harm; while 24% said there will be no harm at all, and 8% were
undecided.

Asked about the impact of religious extremism on the flow of foreign
investment, 51% of respondents said that extremism will greatly harm foreign
investment, 13% said that extremism will moderately harm foreign investment,
4% said that extremism will cause slight harm, while 20% said that there
will be no harm at all and 12% were undecided.

Egyptians expressed more concern about the impact of religious extremism on
tourism than on other activities. Some 57% said that religious extremism
will greatly harm tourism, 13% said that it will moderately harm tourism, 6%
said that it will slightly harm tourism, while 19% believe that it will not
negatively harm tourism and 5% were undecided.

The poll indicates that Egyptians with higher education are more concerned
than the rest of the population about the adverse impact of religious
extremism on Egypt's image abroad, the flow of Arab and foreign investment
into the country, and tourism.

Methodology:

The poll was conducted using both mobile phones and landlines on a sample of
1024 citizens aged 18 years old and above, and covering all governorates.
All phone interviews were conducted on February 1st and 2nd, 2015. The
response rate was around 53%, and the margin of error in the results is less
than 5%. The poll was self-funded by Baseera as a part of its social
responsibility activities.
