Egyptian poll: 34.4% religious extremism exists in Israel

Two-thirds of Egyptians believe that religious extremism exists in Israel
Nearly 60% of Egyptians believe that a more hard-line government in Israel
would increase Islamic extremism

As part of a series of polls conducted by the Egyptian Center for Public
Opinion Research (Baseera) on religious extremism, the center polled
Egyptians about the existence of religious extremism in Israel and the
impact a more hard-line Israeli government could have on the Arab region.

The poll results reveal that 47% of Egyptians are not aware whether there is
religion extremism in Israel or not. Among those who are aware, 63% believe
that religious extremism exists in Israel, 37% believe that it doesn't. The
percentage of those who believe that religious extremism exist in Israel is
lower (58%) among those with less than intermediate education than those
with university education (78%).

With Israel heading soon to elections, respondents were asked if the
election of a more hard-line government in Israel would jeopardize peace
between Israel and Palestine. About 34% of the respondents said that they
don’t know. Among those who said they know, some 68% of respondents said
that the election of a more hard-line government in Israel would jeopardize
the chances of peace between Israel and Palestine, 32% said that this
wouldn't.

About 27% of Egyptians don’t know whether a more hard-line government in
Israel would increase Palestinian suffering or not. Among those who know,
86% believe that a more hard-line government in Israel would increase
Palestinian suffering, 14% said that this wouldn't.

Egyptians are divided on the threat a more hard-line government in Israel
would pose to the normalization of relations between Egypt and Israel, with
52% saying that the election of a more hard-line government in Israel would
jeopardize normalization between Egypt and Israel, 48% saying that it would
not.

The poll results indicate that 69% of Egyptians believe that the presence of
a more hard-line government in Israel would cause instability in the Middle
East, ٣1% said that it wouldn't.

As for the impact of a more hard-line government in Israel on increasing
Islamic extremism, 60% said that such government would increase Islamic
extremism, 40% said that it wouldn't.


Methodology:

The poll was conducted using both mobile phones and landlines on a sample of
1024 citizens aged 18 years old and above, and covering all governorates.
All phone interviews were conducted on February 1st and 2nd, 2015. The
response rate was around 53%, and the margin of error in the results is less
than 5%. The poll was selffunded by Baseera as a part of its social
responsibility activities.
