PIJ Raises Profile In Gaza
GAZA CITY [MENL] -- Islamic Jihad has been allowed to raise its political
profile in the Hamas-ruled Gaza Strip.
Palestinian sources said the Iranian-sponsored Jihad was granted
permission by Hamas to organize rallies throughout the Gaza Strip. They said
the rallies were meant to support the Palestinian attack campaign against
Israel, endorsed by Hamas and other militias.
"Jihad has been given a free hand politically in the Gaza Strip," a
source said.
The sources said Jihad was organizing at least three rallies per week.
They said the nighttime gatherings, coordinated with Hamas, were taking
place in every city in the Gaza Strip.
"Hamas has been encouraging these rallies because it defuses pressure
for rocket attacks on Israel," the source said.
Jihad has been recruiting operatives to sustain the attack campaign in
Israel and the West Bank. Jihad cited Muhanad Al Halabi, said to have
sparked the campaign with a stabbing and shooting on Oct. 3.
