Saudi Sanctions Hizbullah Financiers

Saudi Sanctions Hizbullah Financiers
ABU DHABI [MENL] -- Saudi Arabia has imposed sanctions on Hizbullah.
The Saudi Interior Ministry said the Gulf Cooperation Council kingdom
has designated 12 senior members of Hizbullah for sanctions. The ministry
said the targets were planners of Hizbullah operations in the Gulf.
"These names were designated today and sanctions imposed on them under
the terrorism crimes and financing regime," the Interior Ministry said.
In a statement on Nov. 26, the Interior Ministry said those sanctioned
included the investment arms of Hizbullah outside Lebanon. At least one
member of the list was linked to the assassination of Lebanese Prime
Minister Rafik Al Hariri in 2005.
In March 2014, Riyad deemed Hizbullah a terrorist group. The decision
was followed by the designation of two Hizbullah members in May 2015.
In the latest move, the Saudi kingdom cited Ali Mussa Daqdouq,
identified as a commander of an Iranian cell in Iraq. Daqdouq, believed to
be working for Iranian intelligence in Lebanon, was said to have been linked
to the assassination of Iraqi military officers and scientists.
"He is a key member of the Iranian terror group operating against the
Iraqi people," Gulf Research Center director Abdul Aziz Al Sager said.
Analysts said the Saudi sanctions were meant to highlight Hizbullah's
threat to the Gulf and the rest of the Middle East. They said Hizbullah was
playing a significant role in the Iranian-backed wars in Syria and Yemen.
"The kingdom has taken a serious position against the regime in Syria
and all those who support it," Saudi analyst Ahmed Muwkali said.
