GAZA CITY (Ma’an) – A group of 58 Gazan Palestinians were permitted on
Monday to travel through Jordan’s Karam crossing (Allenby Bridge) from the
occupied West Bank after first leaving the Gaza Strip via the Erez crossing
into Israel.
Sources in the Israeli liaison department in charge of the Gaza Strip said
the crossing was organized upon coordination between the Palestinian and
Israeli liaison departments. Eighty-three Palestinians were scheduled to
leave Erez to Allenby Bridge, but only 58 arrived.
After Israeli authorities allowed them to leave the blockaded coastal
enclave, the Palestinians were taken to the Allenby Bridge crossing in
special buses to then pass through to Jordan, the sources added.
The Israeli liaison department reported that “the number of Palestinian
passengers from the Gaza Strip traveling to Jordan and on to European
countries and other Western countries via Israeli crossings has been
increasing.”
In the past few months, the Israeli sources said, 1,500 Gazan passengers
left to Jordan via Israeli crossings.
The crossing comes after Egyptian authorities reopened the Rafah crossing
between Egypt and the besieged Palestinian territory for 48 hours earlier
this month, after an 85-day closure.
