Weekly Commentary: Palestinians Vote With Their Feet Against Hamas, Gaza Bound Cargo Taxes To Cover PA Gaza Salaries?

Weekly Commentary: Palestinians Vote With Their Feet Against Hamas, Gaza
Bound Cargo Taxes To Cover PA Gaza Salaries?
Dr. Aaron Lerner 10 June 2018

They boasted that a hundred thousand Gazans would march into Israel while
equally huge crowds from the West Bank cross the Green Line to be joined by
a tremendous number of "refugees" entering via Lebanon, Syria and Jordan.

It didn't happen.

With confrontation points spread over the entire length of the Gaza-Israel
line, literally every Gazan was within walking distance of the action.

But only around 10,000 Gazans showed up. That's a fraction of the Gazans
employed by Hamas.

There were next to no physical expressions of support in the West Bank.

Ditto in the countries bordering Israel.

The Palestinians overwhelmingly voted against this project with their feet.

The terror from Gaza isn't driven by the severity of the economic situation
there.

Hamas is investing heavily in preparations to attack Israel despite the
economic situation - not because of it.

Nonetheless, Israel has an interest in conditions in Gaza.

Today Israel collects duty and VAT for cargo bound for Gaza and transfers it
to Ramallah.

Mahmoud Abbas has exacerbated the situation by cutting off the salaries
and/or pensions he was paying Gazans.

Various people have been pitching ideas to improve conditions in Gaza, but
they almost all would require cooperation that is today nonexistent and in
any event would take considerable time to have an impact.

We know the names, bank account numbers and last salaries and/or pensions
paid to Gazans by Ramallah.

If Israel were to deduct this sum from the taxes and VAT collected on Gaza
bound cargo and paid the Gaza salaries and/or pensions either directly or
via some third party the impact of the injection of the money would be
almost instantaneous.
