Weekly Commentary: Seeing Through Rose Colored Glasses? Events Facilitate
Coalition Doing The Right Things
Dr. Aaron Lerner 8 April 2022
When Binyamin Netanyahu was prime minister he invariably justified actions
America didn't like, such as Jewish construction beyond the Green Line, on
domestic political exigencies.
Until now Defense Minister Gantz has done his very best to bar new Jewish
construction in Judea and Samaria. He has prevented another meeting of the
body that approves such programs from taking place and he has also managed
to freeze the progress of most of the programs which were approved in the
one meeting which has been held since the coalition government was formed.
But now the only way to stop the collapse of the coalition government by
Yamina MKs is to approve construction programs AND actually allow them to
proceed.
And Washington knows this.
So, suddenly, Israel finds itself able to launch a huge Jewish construction
program in Judea and Samaria without being subject to any serious
consequences from the Biden Administration.
And, by the same token, Mr. Gantz's own Israeli constituents will accept
this move with complete understanding.
The recent series of terrorist attacks have certainly been painful.
But they also resulted in finally, after literally decades, for a government
to start committing the resources which are going to be needed to literally
take back the Negev and Galilee.
That means, first and foremost, clearing out the huge quantities of illegal
weapons held in Arab communities rather than photo op operations of little
consequence.
And if the guns will be gone that means restoring other elements of law and
order such as ending the protection rackets impacting construction projects
in the two regions and many other facets of life (for example massive theft
and destruction in the agricultural sectors).
The worst of times may actually end up making it possible to reach the best
of times.
