Weekly Commentary: Ex-Brass Talking Head Advocates Stopping As Fears

So I'm watching one of the many ex-brass who now makes money sharing their
wisdom on television.

He patiently explains why we must find a way to stop our operation
immediately in the North:

#1. We have done a great job so far so we can call it a victory and stop.

#2. We need to stop now because at any moment Hezbollah could demolish a
tall apartment building in Tel Aviv.

I'm not making this up.

In plain English, despite the "victory", according to this talking head we
are still deterred by what Hezbollah still can do to us.

So, if we are still deterred by what Hezbollah still can do that means that
Hezbollah, with the help of Iran, can now develop AND IMPLEMENT ON THE
GROUND whatever solutions are needed to neutralize the effectiveness of
everything we have used against them in recent days.

They can implement them on the ground in Lebanon because, as the talking
head explains, we are still afraid of Hezbollah!

Unfortunately, this ex-brass talking head is not alone.

This is not a new attitude.

Years ago I attended a local panel discussion in Raanana on the prospects
for peace in the Middle East. The late Prof. Yeshayahu Leibowitz was one of
the speakers. In the course of the discussion I cited the long history of
conflict in our region, much of which has nothing to do with the
Arab-Israeli conflict, and asked Leibowitz what he thought the long-term
prospects were for peace in the Middle East.

Leibowitz replied that it was clear that peace, any peace, would not last
forever, and that the most one could expect was peace for a few years,
possibly decades. He added, though, that Israel must make every sacrifice
and take every risk in order to get a state of peace, no matter how
fleeting.

No matter how fleeting.

I have children and grandchildren.

I'm not looking for a quick fix at their expense.

And I fervently hope that our decision makers have the same priorities.
