Weekly Commentary: Destructive Ambiguity - Pres. Trump Reverts to Nukes - Drops Enrichment?

Weekly Commentary: Destructive Ambiguity - Pres. Trump Reverts to Nukes -
Drops Enrichment?
Dr. Aaron Lerner, 12 June 2025

For a few days there, President Trump embraced a clear-cut position
vis-a-vis Iran that could be elegantly summarized in two words: "no
enrichment."

The beauty of "no enrichment" as a necessary condition is that it renders
holding negotiations over the details of a deal with Iran completely and
totally irrelevant if, a priori, Iran rejects "no enrichment."

And Iranian officials have, indeed, publicly proclaimed over and over again
in recent days that they fundamentally reject "no enrichment."

With "no enrichment" a necessary condition, Mr. Wittkoff could open his
meeting this Sunday with his Iranian interlocutors by asking, "Does Iran
accept no enrichment?"- and if the answer is "no," Mr. Wittkoff's only role
would be to contact President Trump and relay the Iranian rejection of the
"no enrichment" requirement.

And with the talks dead, the question wouldn't have been if Iran is
attacked, but only the nature of America's role in the attacks.

But now President Trump has reverted to the destructively vague "no nuclear
weapons" formula, which leaves open the possibility of engaging in
open-ended negotiations for years to come.

If President Trump continues to opt for the vague "no nuclear weapons"
instead of "no enrichment," our leaders here in Israel will need to be that
much more courageous to do what is not only right for Israel but for the
entire world.
