Interview: Yuli Tamir - peace camp should not interfere with loan guarantees

Interview: Yuli Tamir - peace camp should not interfere with loan
guarantees

Aaron Lerner Date: 29 January 2003

IMRA interviewed former Immigrant Absorption Minister Yuli Tamir, number 9
on the Labor Party list, in English, on 29 January:

IMRA: As a result of the elections do you see the peace camp focusing its
efforts overseas rather than on the domestic scene?

Tamir: It is too early to tell. We will have to work on all possible
fronts. Our major difficulty is to convince the people that peace is still
an option. If you followed the election you probably observed the fact that
the word "peace" just disappeared from the campaign. It is not something
that's on people's minds and we have to find ways to bring it back into
focus.

IMRA: The Sharon administration is in the midst of discussions with the
United States about loan guarantees. Do you see the peace camp lobbying
over there to put conditions on the loans to try and encourage movement in
the peace process?

Tamir: Basically I would say that I am very much against it. I don't
believe that we should do anything that would prevent loan guarantees
because we know how difficult the economic situation is right here and
therefore I don't think it's the right thing to do.
