Kuwaiti Poll: 89.6 % support war, 76.9 % oppose bin Laden

Survey on Kuwaiti Public Opinion

The results of a Kuwaiti public opinion survey, conducted by two Kuwaiti
researchers, Dr. Nasser Shahab Al-Mowaizri (Media Psychology) and Dr. Saad
Mohammed Al-Rashidi (College of Basic Education), were published in the
Kuwaiti al-Qabas daily newspaper today, March 17, 2003. The survey examines
Kuwaiti opinion on various pressing issues in the country and region today.
The AUK Media and Dialogue Center would like to share these findings with
you,
translated into English.

Sample: 616 Kuwaiti nationals, from different districts of Kuwait City (366
male, and 250 female)

Results:

1. Do you expect a war against Iraq?

Yes: 68.5 %
No: 21.5 %
Don't Know: 10 %

2. Do you support a war against Iraq to remove the current Iraqi regime?

Yes: 89.6 %
No: 8.2 %
Don't Know: 2.2 %

3. Do you support a war against Iraq without removing the current Iraqi
regime?

Yes: 4.4 %
No: 89.6 %
Don't Know: 6 %

4. Are you for or against offering help and support to remove the current
Iraqi regime?

For: 86.3 %
Against: 8.7 %
Don't Know: 5 %

5. Are you for or against offering help and support for the Iraqi people in
case of war?

For: 74.3 %
Against: 18.5 %
Don't Know: 7.2 %

6. Are you planning to leave Kuwait in case of war against Iraq?

No: 81.8 %
Yes: 11 %
Don't Know: 7.2 %

7. Do you have confidence in the actions taken by the Kuwaiti government to
protect the country and its citizens from war?

Yes: 59.7 %
No: 25.3 %
Don't Know: 15 %

8. Do you think that the religion of Islam allows for the killing and
attacking of Americans and foreigners living in Kuwait?

No: 91.5 %
Yes: 2.5 %
Don't Know: 6 %

9. Do you support the killing or attacking of Americans and foreigners
living
in Kuwait, either civilian or military?

No: 88.9 %
Yes: 1.1 %
Don't Know: 10 %

10. Do you support the ideas of Osama bin Laden?

No: 76.9 %
Yes: 8.1 %
Don't Know: 15 %

11. Do you believe that Osama bin Laden did harm to Islam (as a religion),
Moslems, and Arabs?

Yes: 70.4 %
No: 13.6 %
Don't Know: 16 %

Media & Dialogue Center

The AUK Media and Dialogue Center was established in 2003 by Dr. Shafeeq
Ghabra, the first President of the American University of Kuwait, which is
due
to open for classes in the fall semester of 2004.

The primary objective of the Media and Dialogue Center, as a think-tank, is
to
encourage and enhance dialogue and awareness about Kuwaiti and Arab issues.
The Center seeks to bridge the gap between East and West, and to reach out
to
non-Islamic and non-Arab nations and cultures in the spirit of understanding
