Poll no 118 from PCPO: Plurality for suicide attacks, 61.2% Truce would last no more than 3 months

Results of the poll conducted by the Palestinian Center For Public Opinion
(PCPO) to the favour of AL-QUDS newspaper were as follows :

- (50.3%) support at present the conclusion of a mutual truce between the
Palestinians and the Israelis .
- (27.5%) support at various degrees Geneva Initative , (57.9%) are opposing
it at various degrees .
- (64.9%) support currently at various degrees president yassir Arafat .
- (41.8%) support to varying degree Mr. Ahmed Qre' (Abu Al-A'la) as a
Palestinian prime minister .
- (44.9%) of the Palestinians support to various degrees the mutual contacts
conducted recently between the two parties , the Palestinian and the Israeli

A survey of the Palestinian public opinion is recently conducted by the
Palestinian Center for Public Opinion (PCPO) and commissioned by Al-QUDS
daily newspaper, Jerusalem. The poll, being supervised by PCPO-President Dr.
Nabil Kukali, included a random sample of 1072 Palestinian adults, 18 years
and older, from Gaza Strip and West Bank including East Jerusalem reveals
that 50.3 % of the Palestinians support at present the conclusion of a
mutual truce between the Palestinians and the Israelis, while 40.2 % oppose
and 9.5 % are noncommittal.

Dr. Marwan Abu Zuluf , chief- editor of Al-Quds daily newspaper, declared
that the initiative of his newspaper's editorship to conduct the poll
carried out by the Palestinian Center for Public Opinion (PCPO) during the
period 4th - 8th December 2003 and included (1072) Palestinian adults
representing population samples from Gaza Strip and the West Bank ,
including east Jerusalem, is to be considered as a new conception, through
which the editorship is aiming to develop the media work in order to adapt
the current stage and follow the changes in the Palestinian public opinion
in general , and to be aware of its essential issues, which are important
for his present and future, in particular. This all in conformity with the
role entrusted to the highly developed and upgraded media, which exert their
utmost efforts as to anchor the principles of liberty in expressing one's
opinion .

We hope that these polls will achieve their objectives in the service of
democracy and the free , virtuous information .

President of the PCPO , Dr. Nabil Kukali, stated that the average age of the
respondents was (32) years , and the margin of error was (+/-3 ) percent
points .

Kukali also stated that the percentage of female respondents was (47.2%) ,
while that of the male ones was (52.8%). He also stated that the the
respondents location of residence was as follows: (50.6%) city, (32.7%)
village, and (16.7%) refugee camp. he also stated that the percentage of
married was (58.6%) , single (36.1%) , other (5.3%) .

Dr. Kukali said the results of the poll were as follows :

1.Are you with or against the conclusion of a mutual truce between the
Palestinians and the Israelis at present ?
1. with 44.9%
2. against 43.4%
3. don't know 11.7%

2.In case Israel would abide by the truce concluded, which measures do you
expect from Israel to carry out in order to accomplish success ? ( you may
choose more than one answer )
1.To stop assassinations. 31%
2.To stop building the "security wall" 17.5%
3.To lift up the siege and the military closures and to remove the
check-points between the towns. 28.4%
To lift up the siege off President Yassir Arafat. 16.5%
Don't know / refuse the response. 6.6%

3.In case the Palestinians would abide by the truce concluded, which
measures do you expect from the Palestinians to carry out in order to
accomplish success ?
( you may choose more than one answer ).
1. The Palestinian militants should abide by the cessation of the suiciders'
bombings. 33.8%
2. Cessation of the military operations and the armed processions. 20.5%
