Amman - Minister for Civil Affairs, Jameel Tarifi, announced Monday that
Jordan has changed its decision to strip the Jordanian citizenship from
Palestinians living in the Palestinian Areas and holding a job at the
Palestinian National Authority or holding a dual citizenship. Tariffi
comments came at the end of his meeting in Amman with the Jordanian Interior
Minister Sameer Habashneh. The Jordanian decision could have affected more
that 250,000 Palestinians, mostly working in the Gulf states. West Bank
Palestinians were considered until 1986, Jordanian citizens but the late
King of Jordan, Hussein Bin Talal issued a decree severing the relationships
with the West Bank to enable the Palestinian Liberation Organization to
enter the negotiations process with Israel. Since then, Jordan issued
temporary passports to most West Bank Palestinians except those who lived
outside the Palestinian areas.
