PM Sharon Tells Egypt Would Agree To Armed Egyptian Forces In Gaza

Israel Television Channel Two diplomatic correspondent Udi Segal reported
this evening that Prime Minister Ariel Sharon advised Egyptian security
chief Omar Suleiman who is visiting now that Israel would accept the
presence of an Egyptian "police force" in the Gaza Strip after Israel
retreats. Egypt has indicated that it is not interested.

If Sharon's proposal is ultimately accepted it would mark the return of
Egyptian armed forces to the Gaza Strip. Under those circumstances the
Egyptians would no doubt note that the Israeli "police force" in the Gaza
Strip includes tanks, attack helicopters, missile boats and fighter jets.
