[Growing independence?]SAUDI OPENS F-15 MAINTENANCE CENTER
ABU DHABI [MENL] -- Saudi Arabia has opened a center for the maintenance of
its F-15 fighter-jet fleet.
The Royal Saudi Air Force has opened the center at the Prince Khaled Air
Base in the Asir region in the southern portion of the kingdom. The center
will focus on the maintenance and overhaul of the F-15 fighter-jet fleet
procured by the United States over the last 25 years.
In February, Saudi Defense Minister Prince Sultan Bin Abdul Aziz inaugurated
what was termed the F-15 Engine Industrial and Development Center. The
center was meant to overhaul, repair and install the twin engines of the
F-15 aircraft.
Saudi military sources said the center will train Saudi nationals in
servicing the F-15 engine as well as its components. The center will be
overseen by U.S. defense contractors that provide the engine for the F-15.
