PALESTINIANS HUG BUS BOMBERS

PALESTINIANS HUG BUS BOMBERS
BY MICHAEL WIDLANSKI Wednesday, 01 September, 2004

The Palestinian state broadcast media today (Wednesday) embraced
the two terrorists who blew themselves up on two Israeli buses, killing 16
people, bestowing on them the titles "martyr" (shahid) and "citizen"
(muwatin).

The Arabic language broadcasts of Yasser Arafat's Voice of Palestine
condemned Israeli Army's "destruction of the home of martyr Ahmad Kawasmeh
who carried out an explosive attack yesterday" as well as "the destruction
of the home of Citizen Muhammad Ali Ja'abari by dint of charges that he
carried out the explosive attack in Beersheba yesterday."

"The destruction here is amazing and shocking," declared Voice of
Palestine's correspondent Salem Abu-Saleh, reporting from Hebron, where both
suicide bombers lived. Abu-Saleh's emotional descriptions of what he called
barbaric Israeli actions were featured throughout the morning and afternoon
broadcasts.

But the Arabic language broadcasts featured no condemnation of the
attacks inside Israel that left more than 90 people wounded along with the
16 murdered, the youngest of whom was apparently a four-year old girl.

Indeed, leading Palestinian officials made no attempt to hide their
satisfaction at the failure to stop the two Arab bombers, particularly chief
Palestinian negotiator Dr. Saeb Arikat.

"Not building settlements or fences," said Arikat, "is going to bring them
peace."

"What is your answer to what the Israelis call terror?," a VOP
interviewer asked the Palestinian negotiator who is very close to
Palestinian leader Arafat.

"We say the international community has to put pressure on Israel to
withdraw to the June 4 lines. That's the only solution."
