Ehud Barak: I am for disengagement but also for telling the Israeli People the truth (about Bush letter)

Ehud Barak: I am for disengagement but also for telling the Israeli People
the truth (about Bush letter)

Aaron Lerner Date: 27
March 2005

Former prime minister MK Ehud Barak (Labor) told Israel Radio in a live
interview this morning that the meaning of the Bush letter with regards to
the settlement blocs was being misrepresented by the Sharon administration -
and the media.

Barak explained that when Washington says that "existing major Israeli
population centers" would be taken into account in final status talks that
this in no way constitutes an American commitment to supporting the
retention of the settlement blocs.

When Israel Radio news program anchor Arieh Golan berated Barak for "not
supporting disengagement" by saying this, Barak replied that "I am for
disengagement but also for telling the Israeli People the truth," warning of
the consequences "if we fool ourselves" since Washington actually opposes
Israel retaining many of the settlement blocs.

Barak called for an "emergency construction program" to conclude the
construction of the separation fence that would include Maaleh Adumim and
other areas before the disengagement is implemented to insure that Israel
retains those areas regardless of Washington's position.
