Haaretz Military Analyst Amir Oren: Sharon stuck Israel's back in a knife

Haaretz Military Analyst Amir Oren: Sharon stuck Israel's back in a knife

Aaron Lerner Date: 10 September 2005
[With thanks to mideastweb.org for noting the reverse in the "knife in the
back" phrase that Amir Oren used]

"Now Sharon has succeeded in completely confusing the enemy - that's if the
enemy is the IDF. His instructions to evacuate Gaza were given without
advance and deep thought. The planning by the IDF and the National Security
Council that extrapolated from the general instruction to details was like
trying to paste together a shattered vase. The result may look nice but it
won't hold much water.

Sharon stuck Israel's back in a knife. The Egyptians and Palestinians don't
have to budge, the opposite - it is enough that they don't budge and Israel
folds to their demands, because if it doesn't the logic of the unilateralism
will vanish. That's how Israel irrevocably demolished the demilitarization
of the Egyptian border with its own hands: after all, if Israel changes it
mind on the stationing of the Egyptian forces in Rafah, it will need Egypt's
consent, that won't be given.."

Haaretz Military Analyst Amir Oren in his weekly column in the Hebrew
edition
of Haaretz 9 September 2005.
