PLC LOSES TRACK OF 25% OF SECURITY FORCE
RAMALLAH [MENL] -- The Palestinian legislature has failed to account for as
many as 25 percent of Palestinian security officers.
The Palestinian Legislative Council has failed in an effort to track and
identify members of the PA security agencies. The PLC drive was launched to
ensure that the PA was paying salaries to genuine security officers.
But legislators said that neither the PA Interior Ministry nor the Finance
Ministry could confirm the identities of those on the payroll. They said up
to 25 percent of the 60,000 officers were either fictitious or no longer
worked for the security forces. PLC Economic Committee chairman Azmi Shueibi
said $350 million has been channeled every month to pay the salaries of a
reported 60,000 PA security personnel. He said the legislature supported a
Finance Ministry effort to confirm the existence of every security officer
before salary payment.
