[IDF - OK since terrorists stopped] Top IDF officers: Terrorist groups have learned our defense systems

[Dr. Aaron Lerner - IMRA:

"The IDF acted exceptionally. The bottom line is, two terrorists were killed
in the incident. We have here a military system unparalleled in its
efficiency," he said.

Alternatively: Fortunately the terrorists opened fire so we realized they
were there. Otherwise we would have been clueless and they could have
continued on to wherever they wanted to anywhere in the country (in IDF
uniforms) and we would only have realized that they had crossed when they
finally did open fire. Yes - the Kadima Party election campaign ads on TV
featured a film clip showing a high tech system tracking a terrorist
crossing the fence and then him being killed in his tracks before even
crossing - but that was an election campaign clip whose purpose was to
convince Israelis to vote for the Kadima-withdrawal party in confidence.
And at the time the film clip worked just fine.

We are, after all a "results driven" system.

I can drive with two hands punching out SMS messages while I steer with my
knees and my kids jump up and down like chips unfettered by seat belts in
the back seat and until the day comes that we are killed in a car crash I
can swear to you that I am an exceptional driver because, after all, so far,
nothing has gone wrong. Yet.....]

Top IDF officers: Terrorist groups have learned our defense systems

Senior IDF officers said on Sunday that terror groups have learned the
army's defense systems, Army Radio reported, following an infiltration
attempt on Saturday in which Palestinian terrorists climbed over the
security fence wearing IDF uniforms.

The officers added that terrorist organizations would likely increase their
attempts to infiltrate Israeli towns.

"We're not surprised," said Col. Moni Katz, commander of the Northern Gaza
Brigade. "It's obvious to us that this is the reality, and the trend is
apparently that it's going to continue. In the end, our operational response
is currently good."

Meanwhile, on Saturday night, Golani troops arrested two Palestinians who
allegedly assisted the two terrorists in their plot.

IDF troops also arrested three Palestinian fugitives in the West Bank
overnight.

All of the suspects were transferred to security forces for questioning.

Netiv Ha'asara resident Micha Biton told Army Radio on Sunday morning that
contrary to what the defense establishment might say, local residents feel
that the security barrier does not actually provide much security.

"All of us here have warned and spoken about this, that it's just a matter
of time, and something has to be done. The defense establishment, however,
like a mantra that repeats itself, has told us not to worry, 'it's all under
control.' All kinds of people come to us saying that we're not protected -
'You think this wall protects you, but it doesn't,'" Biton said.

In response, Deputy Defense Minister Matan Vilna'i said that there was no
proof that the wall did not provide adequate protection, adding that no
defense could prevent 100 percent of infiltrations.

"The IDF acted exceptionally. The bottom line is, two terrorists were killed
in the incident. We have here a military system unparalleled in its
efficiency," he said.

The infiltration incident occurred early Saturday morning, when the group of
terrorists scaled the security barrier with ropes under the cover of the
early morning fog south of Moshav Netiv Ha'asara.

Initial probes revealed that the terrorists proceeded east to the Erez
checkpoint, where they opened fire with automatic rifles at the district
coordinating office there.

One soldier was lightly wounded in the initial gunfire. Golani Brigade
soldiers then arrived and killed two infiltrators in a close-range gun
battle.
In a separate incident later Saturday, four IDF soldiers were wounded when
an explosive device was detonated near Gaza security fence, close to Kibbutz
Kerem Shalom.

The four soldiers were all evacuated in good condition to Beersheba's Soroka
Medical Center.
