Nablus - Ma'an - Twelve fighters fled a Palestinian Authority (PA) prison
near the West Bank city of Nablus on Friday night after a clash with
Palestinian security forces.

Mahdi Abu Ghazaleh, a Nablus-based commander of the Al-Aqsa Brigades, the
armed organization linked to Fatah, said that he and the other fighters
forced their way out of the Al-Jneid prison, west of Nablus, after enduring
"brutal treatment" by the guards in Section Four of the facility.

"The security forces attacked the brigades' fighters as if we are prisoners,
but we are just arrested for a little time and that violates the agreement
that the detainees are not prisoners, even though we ended the three-month
period in jail," Abu Ghazaleh said.

The 12 detainees had turned themselves in to the PA, agreeing to give up
violence and serve three months in prison in exchange for amnesty from
Israel.

Several Palestinian officials in Nablus refused to comment on the prison
break, saying only that the circumstances surrounding the event were
unclear.
