Maj.-Gen. (res.) Amos Gilad: Egyptian military exercises against Israeli "enemy" a concern

Maj.-Gen. (res.) Amos Gilad: Egyptian military exercises against Israeli
"enemy" a concern
Dr. Aaron Lerner Date: 29 October 2008

Maariv correspondent Ben Caspit reported in the 28 October edition that
during a recent visit to Egypt, Maj.-Gen. (res.) Amos Gilad, Director of the
Military/Political and Policy Bureau of the Israel Ministry of Defense, told
Egyptian Intelligence Minister Omar Suleiman and Egyptian Defense Minister
Hussein Tantawi that Israel was concerned by the "absence of any relations
of any kind between the IDF and the Egyptian Army..There are no visits by
Egyptian officers to Israel, nor exchanges of delegations" and that Israel
is concerned by the carrying out of "Egyptian Army exercises that are
directed against an Israeli threat and that relate to it (AL: Israel) as an
enemy and central focus of the Egyptian officers in force building."

Tantawi replied that an improvement in relations between the armies would
become possible in the future, in tandem with progress in the regional peace
process and that security challenges obligate Egypt to build an effective
deterrence force.

The Egyptian Navy carried out the largest exercise in its history at the end
of last week, calling it "Victory 41" to mark the sinking of the Israeli
Navy vessel Eilat 41years ago. 47 Israeli sailors died and 91 were wounded
in the attack. Haaretz correspondent Yoav Stern reported on 20 October that
the day was set as a holiday for Egyptian naval forces.
