Army Radio: Binyamin Regiment Commander Col. Gal Hirsh on situation

Army Radio: Binyamin Regiment Commander Col. Gal Hirsh on situation

Aaron Lerner Date: 9 October, 2000

The following is IMRA's English translation of a summary of the
comments of Binyamin Regiment Commander Col. Gal Hirsh in an
interview on Army Radio this evening:

Last night there were still incidents of Palestinian fire and
demonstrations near Psagot and Ofra.

It is quiet now in Psagot. Attempts to heat up the area in Beit El
were also halted immediately and we hope that the trend towards quiet
will continue.

There is friction between the residents of Beit El and Psagot and the
Palestinians, yet it was possible in the past and also in the future
to maintain understandings. We have a controlled reaction to violence
and we plan to be the Israel DEFENSE Force.

I do not feel that I am missing anything, be it instructions or
equipment or capabilities in order to defend Binyamin.

Our hands are not tied, but until now we chose to react and recently
we increased the level of our response when we decided to position
tanks in a number of locations. I did not put tanks in Psagot for
decoration.

It is not easy to deal with a civilian population, and the cynical
use of civilians by the Palestinians is terrible. The Palestinians
send children to the battleground and afterwards they complain.
Whoever sends children to a clash point should not be surprised by
the results.

The settlers deserve praise for their steadfastness. They have
persevered under heavy fire.
