50% increase in the number of Bedouin volunteers for combat service in the
desert reconnaissance battalion

Maariv correspondent Amir Buchbut reports in the 24 June edition in March
there was a 50% increase in the number of Bedouin volunteers for combat
service in the desert reconnaissance battalion in the March draft. A 65%
increase over last year is expected for the summer draft.

Buchbit reports that a senior officer in the Southern Command noted that
within the Bedouin communities in the north and south some those who serve
find their lives threatened and their families also subject to mockery and
derision. He attributed the increase in recruits to the direct involvement
of COS Ashkenazi as well as visits by battalion commanders to homes and
schools.
