Sarid Poll: Deri party would get 7 seats

Sarid Poll: Deri party would get 7 seats
Dr. Aaron Lerner Date 27 June 2010

Israel Television Channel 2 broadcast the following Sarid Institute poll
result on 22 June:

If elections held today (expressed in Knesset seats)
Current Knesset seats in [brackets].
-- 07 00 [--] Party headed by Arieh Deri
33 31 28 [27] Likud
28 27 29 [28] Kadima
12 12 13 [15] Yisrael Beiteinu
10 08 09 [11] Shas
08 0808 [13] Labor

Results for the other parties not shown - but they report that the Deri
party would take 1 mandate from Yahadut Hatorah and 1 mandate from Jewish
Home.

Among many in the Israeli Left, Deri is seen as a "Leftist's Hope" since he
can draw voters with a national orientation while he himself is believed to
be considerably flexible by his many close friends in the Israeli left.

Can raising questions relating to his stand on Arab-Israeli issues cool
support for Deri? That's a tricky question because, of course, he could
simply lie to potential voters about his stand and then turn his back on
them later. A change in position later would, of course, require getting the
approval of Rabbi Ovadiah Yoseph. Rabbi Yoseph would not support a policy
he believed leads to immediate danger for Israel. On the other hand, he
takes the position that actions that could bring danger only in the long
term are acceptable since as only dangers in the short term or near term are
significant..
