Jordan King meets Israeli Defense Minister

Amman, August 29 (Petra - Jordan news agency) -- His Majesty King Abdullah
II on Sunday met Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak and discussed with him
efforts tailored to resolve the Palestinian-Israeli conflict within a
regional context that brings about comprehensive and permanent peace.

King Abdullah and Barak also discussed steps needed to ensure the success of
the direct Palestinian-Israeli peace talks which will get underway next
Wednesday in Washington DC.

The King stressed that direct negotiations should be taken seriously and
address all final status issues to arrive at the two-state solution which
guarantees a viable and independent Palestinian state on Palestinian
national soil, a state that lives in peace and security alongside Israel in
accordance with the relevant terms of reference.

King Abdullah reiterated that comprehensive peace, that is based on the
two-state formula, is a real guarantee for regional security and stability.

Achieving peace in the Middle East, the King said, is a regional and
international strategic interest,.

He called upon all parties involved to step up efforts to make the
forthcoming talks a success and achieve speedy and tangible progress.

The meeting was attended by Royal Court Chief Nasser Lozi, King's Adviser
Ayman Safadi and the accompanying delegation of Barak who left the kingdom
following his brief visit.
