Amman, Sept 6 (Petra - Jordan news agency) -- His Majesty King Abdullah II
returned home on Monday after a brief working visit to Syria and talks with
Syrian President Bashar Al Assad on developments in the region and latest
peace efforts.
The talks focused on efforts to resolve the Palestinian-Israeli conflict on
the basis of the two-state solution and bring about comprehensive peace in
the region.
King Abdullah briefed the Syrian leader on a series of meetings he held in
Washington last week with leaders involved in the peace process on the eve
of the launch of direct Palestinian-Israeli peace talks.
The King and Assad emphasised that resolving the conflict according to the
two-state solution and within a regional context that guarantees restoration
of all Arab rights as stipulated by international legitimacy resolutions and
credible terms of reference, namely the Arab peace initiative, is the basis
for comprehensive and just peace in the region.
The talks also dealt with mechanisms to cement cooperation between Jordan
and Syria and both leaders expressed relief at the level of ties and
keenness on further boosting relations in economic and other fields through
feasible steps.
King Abdullah and President Assad also agreed to pursue coordination and
consultation on various bilateral and regional issues "in a way to serve the
common interest of the two countries.
" The talks, attended by Prime Minister Samir Rifai and his Syrian
counterpart Mohammad Naji Etri as well as senior officials on both sides,
also tackled ways of forging "institutionalised cooperation among Arab
countries to boost joint Arab action and the ability of Arab states to face
common challenges and serve Arab issues and interests.
