In a live interview broadcast after the 7:00 AM news on Israel Radio
this morning, Prime Minister Ehud Barak said that negotiations with
the Palestinians would not resume until the violence was reduced "a
lot". In earlier comments, Barak used stronger terms (such as "very
very much"). Later in the interview Barak said that the talks would
only resume if there was a "significant" reduction.

While "senior sources" on Barak's plane two days ago told Israel
Radio correspondent Yoni Ben Menachem that "we won't let some rocks"
stop negotiations, Barak said this morning that "some shots fired in
the wilderness" would not stop the negotiations.

It is apparent from the interview that the action proposals that the
military presents to the government for consideration are
pre-censored so that they jibe with the worldview of the Barak
government. Barak said that the IDF was not being held back by the
government, explaining that "we have an understanding of the
diplomatic/security situation and the military submits plans
appropriately."

Barak explained that sometimes the best response to violence is to
"bite your lip."

Barak also noted that borders would be determined in negotiations.
