Delta Corrects Website After Civil Rights Group Shurat
HaDin—Israel Law Center Calls Airline Officials
Removes Expression "Occupied Palestinian Territories" From Its Website
Law Center Representing Victims of Terrorism Applauds Delta for its Swift
Response
(February 7, 2012, New York) Civil rights group Shurat HaDin—Israel Law
Center today warned officials of Delta Airlines that describing the West
Bank and Gaza Strip as ―occupied Palestinian territories‖ is both
politically charged and an incorrect application of international law.
Delta had utilized the expression "Occupied Palestinian Territories" in a
section of its website concerning frequent flier mileage. Shortly after
receiving a phone call from Shurat HaDin attorneys, Delta removed the
inaccurate language from its website. Delta‘s quick response demonstrates
its acknowledgment of the politicization and widespread misuse of the legal
term
‗occupied territory‘ and reinforces the inappropriateness of the application
of the term to the
disputed territories under Israel‘s administration.
Shurat HaDin—Israel Law Center (http://israellawcenter.org/) is an
international human rights law organization dedicated to enforcing basic
human rights through the legal system and to representing victims of
terrorism in courtrooms around the world. The organization is based in Tel
Aviv and has an American office located in New York.
According to Shurat HaDin, the law is clear when it comes to what
constitutes an ―occupied‖ territory – and neither the West Bank, nor Gaza,
can be accurately described as occupied by Israel. Describing the West Bank
and Gaza Strip as ―occupied Palestinian territories‖ is intentionally
misleading and serves the Palestinians‘ political agenda to prejudice the
outcome of future territorial resolutions.
Attorney Kenneth Leitner said, ―Delta‘s quick response should be commended
and shows that it has no interest in being used as a vehicle for the
dissemination of Palestinian nationalist propaganda.‖
