RAMALLAH, February 20, 2012 (WAFA) – Egypt agreed Monday to supply the Gaza
Strip with 5 megawatt of power starting next week in the first stage of
providing power to the coastal enclave to solve its electricity crisis,
according to an official.

Chairman of the Palestinian Energy Authority Omar Kittaneh told WAFA that
Egyptian Minister of Electricity and Energy Hassan Younis informed him in a
telephone call that Egypt has agreed to immediately supply Gaza with 5
megawatt of power.

He said the Egyptian and Palestinian sides “have reached a solution to the
power problem in Gaza through three stages -- short-term, mid-term and
long-term.”

He said the Egyptian initiative is based on increasing power supply to Gaza
by 40 megawatt through increasing the operational capacity of Sinai’s power
station.

Kittaneh said running the second stage will cost around $1 million, funded
by the Islamic Development Bank.

He said the reason behind the severe power crisis in Gaza is due to the lack
of fuel needed to operate Gaza’s power station.
