Weekly Commentary: Watershed event: defying the predictions
Dr. Aaron Lerner Date: 10 April 2014
Last year Secretary of State John Kerry was absolutely certain that he could
pressure PM Netanyahu to release the pre-Oslo Israeli Arab terrorists so he
told Mahmoud Abbas that Netanyahu agreed.
And he didn't reach this conclusion alone.
His Jewish advisors as well as their left wing Israeli friends were
convinced that what pressure on PM Netanyahu couldn't achieve could be
attained by even more pressure on Netanyahu.
To be clear: that's pressure instead of offering a solid win-win solution.
At this point in time it appears that Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu is
determined to insure that the current dispute is not concluded with an
Israeli humiliation.
Right now there's no panic.
Just moves across the chessboard.
And that's very important.
Because the sooner the other players understand and appreciate that Israel
cannot be pressured into acting against its national interests the sooner we
can shift to workable arrangements rather than such ideologically driven
fantasies as a sovereign Palestinian state living side-by-side in peace with
Israel.
