[Dr. Aaron Lerner - IMRA: If Abbas closes shop in response to the failure
of his move in the UN then Israel will have to seek the most workable
framework for moving on. Annexation of Area C - where the overwhelming
majority are Israeli, would leave a series of urban centers with
hinterlands, each center having its own municipal leadership that would
serve as the interface with Israeli authorities in the absence of the
Palestinian Authority. How would the Palestinian street respond to the
development? Well the Palestinians inside Area C would be like lottery
winners - Israeli residence with the option to take Israeli citizenship.
How the rest fare is a question of how things develop. Take note: since
each urban center has its own leadership it will be possible to
differentiate between areas in a "carrot and stick" approach. Expect a
win-win for Israel with a dramatic drop in foreign workers as a massive
return of legal Palestinian workers takes place while at the same time
Palestinian economic activity takes off with Palestinian factories
increasing sales to the Israeli market and also acting as subcontractors for
Israeli companies.]
Abbas says to cut ties with Israel if UN resolution fails

BETHLEHEM (Ma'an) -- President Mahmoud Abbas on Tuesday said the PA will cut
ties with the Israeli government if a draft resolution presented last week
to the UN fails to pass.
Speaking to reporters in Algeria, Abbas said if the UN Security Council
resolution fails the leadership will be forced to take the
"necessary political and legal decisions," the Algerian Press Service
reported.
"In case of failure, we will no more deal with the Israeli government which
will then be obliged to assume its responsibilities as an occupier," the
news agency said.
Abbas said that Palestine will "ultimately regain its independence" with
East Jerusalem as its capital, and will not succumb to "Israeli hegemony and
oppression."
The president met his Algerian counterpart Abdelaziz Bouteflika on Monday
during a three-day official visit.
Jordan presented the draft resolution last week to the UN Security Council
on behalf of the PLO.
The resolution sets a 12-month deadline for wrapping up negotiations on a
final settlement and the end of 2017 as the time-frame for completing an
Israeli withdrawal from occupied Palestinian territories.
A final peace deal would pave the way to the creation of a Palestinian state
with Jerusalem as a shared capital, according to the text.
On Tuesday, PLO negotiator Saeb Erekat said the UN Security Council would
vote on the draft text before the end of 2014, although there is still no
set date.
The Democratic Front for the Liberation of Palestine has urged the
Palestinian leadership to "immediately withdraw" the draft resolution,
arguing that the leadership is presenting a confusing picture of the bid.
